Member Milestone: 20 Years of O’Brien Electrical Campbellfield
22 October 2024
O'Brien Electrical Campbellfield in Victoria is proudly celebrating their 20th year as a Member of the O'Brien and Laser Group Network. Over the past two decades, the business has thrived, benefiting from the support and collaboration that comes with being part of the Network.
Owned by spouses Andrew and Shelley, this dynamic company has evolved significantly since 1996, when Andrew bought the existing business where he completed his apprenticeship. They joined the Network in 2004 as Laser Electrical Campbellfield, with a later transition to O’Brien Electrical Campbellfield.
Specialising in electrical services that range from domestic to industrial work and even solar installations, the company has consistently sought to expand its horizons.
Their can-do attitude is evident in their approach to challenges, such as when they took on the unique task of wiring lift panels during the COVID-19 pandemic. This project not only showcased their versatility but also became a crucial source of revenue during a challenging time.
How Did O’Brien Electrical Campbellfield Benefit from Becoming a Member?
In August 2004, the business joined the O’Brien and Laser Network, a decision driven by the desire for better networking opportunities. Andrew and Shelley recognised that being part of a larger franchise would allow them to share knowledge and resources with like-minded operators. Shelley said:
“Whenever I need something, it’s just a phone call away — whether that’s reaching out to another Member, the support office, or even O’Brien staff members, who’ve become like good friends over the years.
We’ve been part of the Network since the very beginning, so I feel comfortable reaching out whenever I need help. I never hesitate to pick up the phone and ask, “How do I do this?”.
We’re not the best at marketing and other things like that, but the Network has always been there to help us along the way. If something isn’t working, it’s usually on us for not following through.
When you’re a small business owner, you’re a jack of all trades, and there are so many things you need to know — but also a lot you don’t. You often learn by trial and error, but having the support of the O'Brien and Laser Network has been like a security blanket. It’s reassuring to know that someone is always there to help when you need it.”
Another benefit was access to software, which meant a better way of working. The business moved from an informal, mental calculation of billing to a more systematic approach. Thanks to the support of the O’Brien and Laser Network, they implemented accounting systems that streamlined their operations and enhanced their overall efficiency.
How Networking Became Key to Success
Throughout their journey, the company has built a strong network with fellow O’Brien and Laser Members. This camaraderie has been instrumental in their growth, enabling them to share insights, solve problems, and collaborate on projects across Australia. Shelley said:
“That’s what the Network is for — you don’t have to sit there struggling when someone else has already been through it. The beauty of the Network is that, whether it’s HR issues, forms, or any other aspect of running a business, there’s usually someone who’s done it before. And when we collaborate, we come up with some brilliant solutions. It’s that old saying — many hands make light work.”
The partnership with O’Brien has also instilled a sense of community among Members. The willingness of Members to share resources, answers to common problems, and even lend a helping hand exemplifies the supportive culture that O’Brien fosters.
Andrew reflects on how the Network contrasts sharply with the traditional electrical business landscape, where sometimes businesses do not support each other. The mutual support within the O’Brien and Laser community has been a game-changer, allowing them to navigate challenges together and celebrate successes collectively. Andrew said:
“When you’ve got a problem on a job and you’re unsure about something, it’s great to have the Network to lean on. I can ring up another Member and ask, “How would you handle this?”. Instead of going in blind, I can just call and get an honest answer from someone who’s been through it.”
As we celebrate 20 years of O’Brien Electrical Campbellfield as a valued Member of the O’Brien and Laser Network, it is clear that their journey is not just about business growth; it is about building relationships, fostering a culture of learning, and contributing to the broader community.
The story of this family-owned business serves as an inspiring testament to the power of resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing industry.
Collaboration in Action — The Fire Signs Project
Notable achievements include the refurbishment of electronic fire signs across Victoria and participation in national contracts for major brands. Such projects have not only contributed to their bottom line but have also reinforced their reputation for quality and their connections within the Network. Shelley said:
“A great example of the support we’ve received is when we worked on refurbishing fire signs. We had a lot of discussions with another Member, Paul from O’Brien Electrical Greensborough. He shared how he handles similar jobs, like the 7-Eleven projects he works on. He’s been instrumental in everything we’ve done, and whenever we hit a roadblock, whether it’s work-related or something else, he’s been there. We’ve become such good friends because of it.”
Members also come together to raise money for charities.
