Lighting for a cleaner, safer world.
What is UV-C Lighting and how can it be used in your workplace or home?
Ultra-Violet (UV) light is invisible to the human eye and is divided into three types, UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. These three types of UV radiation are found in sunlight.
We don’t normally come into contact with UV-C because the ozone layer filters it out in the Earth’s atmosphere. The wavelength of UV-C light is shorter than the wavelength of the light we can see and spans the range of 100-280 nanometers (nm). It is most effective at inactivating viruses on or around 260-265nm, which is known as the ‘germicidal peak’. UV-C light has the ability to deactivate the DNA of bacteria and viruses making them unable to reproduce and cause illness.
Humans and animals should not be exposed to germicidal UV-C light at this wavelength, it can cause damage to their skin and eyes after very limited direct exposure, which is why you should always use trusted and accredited experts to correctly install these products. Provided that UV-C lighting products are used and installed correctly, according to the user manuals and mounting instructions, UV-C lighting is a reliable and highly effective form of disinfection.
Whilst UV-C technology has been around for more than 40 years, the ability to use this technology in new settings and environments has been growing. Working closely with our trusted supply partner, Philips, we are excited to learn about the wide range of applications where this technology can be used. UV-C lighting helps to create a cleaner, safer environment in work places, homes, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, the list goes on and on.
The innovative and clever applications of this technology are now suitable for air, surface, object and water disinfection in both residential and professional settings.
