What is RCD Testing?
Testing RCDs, also known as safety switches or safety switch testing, is an electrical test that safely trips your residual current device to check it operates as intended.
An RCD is a safety device that is designed to ‘trip’ in order to prevent electric shock or other harm – in short, it switches off all the power to electrical circuits.
What is an RCD and What Do They Do?
Residual current devices (RCD) are safety switch installations that shut down the electrical power supply to affected circuits. It maintains the same current flowing into and out of the circuit and breaks the circuit when that flow is interrupted to prevent injury to individuals or to prevent creating conditions that could start an electrical fire.
Residual Current Devices Testing Requirements
Australian and New Zealand standards for RCD testing requirements detail the maximum “trip times” for various residual current devices and the competency of the technician testing your electrical equipment. They need to assess if the RCD is tripping quickly enough, as potential for harm is significantly reduced the quicker a device trips.
Push button testing of your RCD is also required under Australian Standards on a 6 monthly basis. This can be completed by the responsible staff member or by the technician you are engaging to complete electrical safety services.
What is a Push Button Test?
The push button test is run with an electricity supply connected and assesses when the RCD will trip in the event there is an earth leakage. The device should break the electrical circuit, protecting the individual from suffering an electrical shock.
Who Can Provide RCD Testing?
The only competent person who should be running any form of test on electrical equipment is a qualified electrician, who is familiar with the AS/NZS2293 standards.
Whether it is an RCD or push button test, only a certified professional has the knowledge of RCD requirements and experience with electrical equipment to safely test your residual current devices.
Who is Required to do RCD Testing?
In Australia, all commercial businesses must be tested regularly to ensure their equipment meets RCD testing requirements to maintain electrical safety and compliance.
One important component of electrical safety is the installation of RCD Safety Switches. Once the RCD’s are installed, they are also required to be tested periodically to ensure they are working correctly. There are RCD Testing Requirements in place to help the owner maintain safety and compliance.
