How does a solar battery work?
In a typical home with solar panels, part or all of your energy usage may be met by solar generation while the sun is shining. Any excess solar energy is exported to the grid. Shortfalls, most often experienced in the early morning, evening, overnight or in cloudy weather, are met by importing electricity from the grid.
This is where a solar-battery system can help to save money.
When you add a battery to an existing rooftop solar system, or install rooftop solar panels and a battery together in a new system, the excess solar energy not used at home during the day can be used to charge the battery.
The energy stored in a solar-battery system is used in the home whenever there is energy usage above the level produced by the solar panels. This battery energy can power household appliances before any energy is required to be imported from the grid.
Once the stored energy is depleted, grid power (or an alternative generator) will supply household energy requirements until solar generation is available the next day.
What rebates are available?
O'Brien Electrical Rowville are an authorised solar battery installer under the Solar Victoria Solar Battery Rebate Program. Solar battery rebates will remain at their current value of up to $4,174 until all rebates in 2020–21 have been fully allocated. They will then reduce to $3,500 so now is the time to utilise the government incentives.
Am I eligible?
To be eligible for a battery rebate you must meet all of the following criteria:
- the property already has solar PV panels with a capacity equal to or greater than 5kW
- you are the owner-occupier of the property where the system is to be installed
- you have not already received a rebate as an owner-occupier under the Solar Homes Program
- the combined household taxable income of all owners is less than $180,000 a year (based on your Australian Tax Office Notice of Assessment)
- it is an existing property, valued at under $3 million based on the current council rates notice
- the property address has not previously taken part in the Solar Homes Program
- pre-approval is obtained from your Distributed Network Service Provider (DNSP) to safely connect a battery to the grid
- the energy storage solution is listed on Solar Victoria’s Approved Battery List and the property does not have an existing energy storage system
- you agree to receive information from your Distribution Network Service Provider about taking part in battery trials to maximise the value households get from them.
