How to Safely Shut Down Your Solar Inverter Before a Cyclone
Preparing your solar system for a cyclone is crucial to prevent damage from high winds, flying debris, and electrical hazards. Follow these simple steps to safely turn off your solar inverter and protect your system.
Step 1: Power Down the Solar Inverter
- Locate your inverter – Typically mounted near your switchboard or meter.
- Turn off the AC mains switch – Found in your switchboard, usually labeled “Solar Supply Main Switch” or “Inverter AC Isolator.
Step 2: Shut Down the Solar DC Isolators
- Find the DC isolators – These may be near the inverter or on the roof.
- Switch all DC isolators to OFF – This ensures no power is flowing from the solar panels.
Step 3: Confirm the System is Fully Off
- Check the inverter display – It should be completely off (no lights or readings).
- Verify all isolators (AC & DC) are switched off.
After the Cyclone: How to Safely Restart Your Solar System
- Inspect your system – Look for any visible damage before turning it back on.
- Restart in reverse order – Turn on DC isolators → Inverter → AC mains switch.
- If you suspect damage, do not turn the system back on – Contact a licensed solar electrician for an inspection.
