What is backflow prevention and why do I need it?
Backflow prevention devices prevent contaminated water from flowing back into the public water supply. This can often happen when there is a difference in water pressure, causing unclean water to be drawn back and mixed with the clean water supply.
Backflow can be caused by back pressure, where downstream water pressure rises above the supply pressure, as well as back-siphonage where a burst pipe or a large volume of water creates a vacuum in the system.

What is a TMV?
A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) is a device that blends hot and cold water to regulate the temperature of your water supply and ensure against the risk of scalding. TMVs are necessary because in certain facilities hot water must be stored at a temperature of at least 60 degrees celsius to prevent harmful bacteria like Legionnaires’ disease from spreading. However, it only takes a second for water above 60 degrees to scald. To prevent this, a TMV mixes cold and hot water before it reaches the point of supply to deliver water that is clean and at a safe temperature to use.
A routine inspection, test and maintenance must be conducted at least once every 12 months and the TMV’s thermostat and o-rings need to be replaced every 5 years under Australian Standard AS4032.3.
