A Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES) is a document that verifies that the electrical work conducted in your home or business complies with the Electricity Safety Act 1998 and Electricity Safety (Installations) Regulations 2009.
Here are some facts you should know.
- Only a licensed electrician can complete and lodge a Certificate of Electrical Safety
- Work carried out should be completed and tested to Australian Standards
- A licensed electrician is responsible for the work they have carried out.

- A Registered Electrical Contractor, where required, by law must provide a COES even if the customer does not want one.
- Most important – it is illegal to do your own electrical work.
